Sucker Rod and Polished Rod Connection Thread Plug and Thread Ring Gages

Some tips and best practices for using Thread Plug and Ring Gages are:

  • Select the correct size and class of fit for the gages according to the specifications of the threaded parts. Confirm that the gages conform to the proper national or international standard, such as ANSI/ASME, ISO or JIS.
  • Calibrate the gages regularly and recheck them with the matching master set plug before use. The set plug must be clean and calibrated to ensure it is not nicked, tapered or out of tolerance. Lubricate the set plug with a thin film of light viscosity oil.
  • Clean the threaded parts and the gages before and after gauging. Use a cleaning solvent or pressurized air to remove any dirt or debris and then apply a rust preventative or gage preservative to protect the gages from any type of corrosion.
  • Use the Go thread plug gage to check the internal threads and the go thread ring gage to check the external threads. The go gage should engage the threaded part with very little force. If the Go gage does not enter or pass through the part, the part is too small or tight and needs to be addressed accordingly.
  • Use the NO GO thread plug gage to check the internal threads and the no-go thread ring gage to check the external threads. The NO GO gage should not enter or pass through the part more than the specified number of turns, usually three. If the NO GO gage enters or passes through the part more than the allowed amount, the part is too large or loose and needs to be addressed accordingly to ensure the part is meeting proper specifications.
  • Use several sets of thread ring gages and rotate them for in-process inspection, final inspection, and dispute resolution. This will help to avoid any type of excessive wear and damage to the gages and ensure needed consistent results.

Thread Plug and Ring Gages are used to measure the pitch diameter and thread form of external and internal threads on Sucker Rods and Polished Rod Connections in the oil and gas industry. These gages are also known as screw thread gages or thread gauges. They are designed to ensure that the threaded parts are within the specified tolerance limits and can be assembled properly.
